Gymnázium Alejová in Košice

Gymnázium Alejová in Košice was founded in 1988 as a grammar school specialising in Mathematics – with its accelerated advanced math curriculum for talented and gifted students, the second of its type in Slovakia. In 2014 it celebrated its 25th anniversary. After nationwide curriculum reform in 2008 the school keeps to the form of traditional gymnazium with alternative curriculum enabling it to inroduce a greater differenciation and selectivity of school subjects in the last two grades and has a special class and programme for exceptionally talented children. With focus on Math our students traditionally achieve excellent accoplishments in Mathematics, IT , science not only in Slovakia, but also in international competitions. Students are accepted to school from all over the city and its surrounding villages on the basis of their results in entrance exams or excellent previous academic performance and achievements at primary school. After finishing their studies they take school- leaving exams in four subjects, among which Slovak language and one foreign language are obligatory. The English language is a compulsory subject and in addition students are required to choose a second language : German, French or Russian. Other standardised subjects are History, Civics, Math, Computer Science, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Geography, Ethics, Esthetics/Arts, Physical Education, Descriptive Geometry and Study of Religion..

Currently, our school employs 48 teachers and has 20 classes and 545 students who follow two different programmes:

a)     4 – year study – a traditional grammar school study attended by 14 -19 .year old students serving grades 10 to 13.

b)    8 – year study – a grammar school study for 11 – 19 year – old students. The first four years supplement the second primary education stage performed at primary schools. Nevertheless, it is more demanding and prepares students for the grammar school study in our school and their university studies after Maturita..

The school has run two international educational projects in the last ten years :

Comenius Socrates (2005 – 2007) project  Borderline in the framework of  which we cooperated with six European schools  in Poland, Italy, Romania, Lichtenstein and France.

Dreams and Teams since 2005 till present time  run by the British Council and UK ´s Youth Sports Trust  aiming to develop leadership skills among international young leaders around the globe, through sports. The project.entails  partnership with Ashington Sports High in UK

In their free time, our students work in 30 different  interesting clubs:Logo club,debate, language, various sports clubs,outdoor activities club, Math clubs, programming etc..
Students with literary bent can contribute to the students magazine Galeje or work in. our school radio Prestige. School has two  conference rooms available for presentations (85 seat and 35 seat ) and five computer labs.
